Citigroup has strengthened its Financial Institutions Investment Banking division with the appointment of two senior bankers as the firm expands its global insurance and specialty finance advisory capabilities.
Jonathan Alpert will join Citi in September as Global Head of Insurance, bringing more than 28 years of experience across the insurance industry and investment banking. He joins from Bank of America, where he most recently served as Co-Head of Global Insurance, according to an internal memo.
Based in New York, Alpert will partner closely with Brian Malbacho, Citi’s North America Head of Insurance, to further enhance the bank’s global insurance franchise. Citi said Alpert has advised on several high-profile cross-border insurance transactions and has longstanding relationships with leading global insurance groups.
The appointment comes as Citi looks to capitalize on increasing deal activity across the insurance sector, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, where insurers are actively pursuing capital-raising initiatives and merger-and-acquisition opportunities. Citi noted that Alpert will play a key role in supporting the bank’s continued growth with leading insurers across the region.
In a separate appointment, Ryan Willingham will join Citi in August as Managing Director covering Specialty Finance. Willingham also joins from Bank of America, where he most recently led coverage of the specialty finance sector within the bank’s Financial Institutions group.
Willingham brings nearly two decades of experience advising mortgage originators and servicers, mortgage REITs, government-sponsored enterprises, and other specialty finance firms.
The senior hires underscore Citi’s continued investment in expanding its Financial Institutions advisory platform and strengthening sector expertise amid evolving market opportunities globally.
