Global banking major Citi has appointed Bhavin Shukla as Managing Director and Head of Infrastructure Investment Banking for Japan, Asia North and Australia (JANA) and Asia South, as it looks to strengthen its position in the region’s rapidly expanding infrastructure market.

In his new role, Shukla will serve as a regional anchor for Citi’s infrastructure platform, overseeing advisory, financing, and deal origination activities. He will collaborate closely with sector teams spanning financial sponsors, natural resources, and real estate, alongside global partners across the firm.

Shukla joins Citi from J.P. Morgan, where he held dual leadership roles as Head of Asia Infrastructure Investors Coverage (excluding Australia) and Head of India Infrastructure Investment Banking. During his tenure, he played a key role in building a regional franchise focused on advisory, financing, and risk management solutions for infrastructure funds, sovereign wealth funds, and corporate clients.

The appointment comes amid what industry observers describe as an emerging “infrastructure supercycle” in Asia-Pacific, driven by increased investments in energy transition, digital infrastructure, and urban development, alongside rising private capital inflows.

Citi noted that the creation of this senior leadership role aligns with its long-term strategy to expand its infrastructure advisory and financing capabilities both regionally and globally. The bank highlighted Shukla’s experience in complex transactions and strong relationships with key investors as critical to advancing its ambitions in the sector.

The move also reflects intensifying competition among global financial institutions seeking to capture deal flow tied to large-scale infrastructure investments, as governments and private investors accelerate spending on renewable energy, transportation networks, and digital connectivity across the region.
